If you like what you've heard here support his great band by
spreading the word, buying an album, or seeing them in concert!
"Doug's Jukebox" at The Josh Ritter Fansite is a place to hear, enjoy, and perhaps discover some other great artists and their music.  Whether they are underrated indie artists or bonafide legends, they're artists I'm passionate about.  Maybe you will be too?
A Special "Jukebox" Feature
November, 2005.   This is a unique installment of "Doug's Jukebox."  If you've been a visitor toThe Josh Ritter Fansite or DougRice.net for awhile, you know I've been offering mp3's and extended sound clips of artists that I'm crazy about - in the hopes that others will, like the saying goes above, "hear, enjoy, and maybe even discover" some of these other great artists and their music.  This current Jukebox offering is definitely all three of those things, especially "enjoy" and hopefully "discover."
About a month ago, through Josh's fan community, I came across a band from England called "The Doubtful Guest."  On their website, I heard soundclips from their album "Volume 2".  I fell out of my chair.  I searched online to see where their albums were being sold and when I could see them live.  Couldn't find much.   I emailed them and learned that they're an unsigned band.  I fell out of my chair again.  Loyal Josh Ritter fan Andy Hill - who is the band's cheif songwriter and singer - sent me their cd.  I listened to it straight through, fell out of my chair (a third time), and have been listening to it almost exclusively since then.
.
So what's so good about 'em and why do I dig 'em so much?  Well, for starters: Andy Hill is blessed with a wonderfully thick and cutting voice that shines on both the band's awesome rockers ("Moment of the Year") and sweet ballads ("Head on Backwards").  The guitar work is some of the most tasteful guitar touches and solos and hooks that I've heard in a long while.  The songwriting is accomplished on all the songs, with lyrics that paint wonderful pictures, maintain a sense of humor, and know when to just come out say what they mean.
And ah, their style... they take familiarly welcome, tried and true, and even diverse genres like alt-country, soul, folk, rock, and blues and combine them into one big ole sound.  The result is not only a record of incredible diversity, but SONGS of wonderful diversity that often shift gears between these genres - within their three minutes of play time.  They're a folk band.  They're a blues band.  They're a jam band.  Whatever.  They're a sweet band.
I encourage everyone who visits this site to give a listen to 'The Guest below.  Perhaps you'll dig and appreciate them as much as I do.  If you do, spread the word about them.  Post on some message boards, play the mp3 below for friends, go see them if you're in the UK, order the cd online at their website, or at least enjoy their tunes.  I certainly do.
For more extended clips of the songs on "Volume 2," visit The Doubtful Guest's website.
