> Josh Ritter Fansite: East Coast Shows - Somerville Theatre 4/23/04
.
THE SOMERVILLE THEATRE SHOW was somewhat of a homecoming for Josh and the band. Afterall, Boston has been a headquarters of sort these past few years - and they've called it home. This was also the first of six shows with the amazing Erin McKeown, so fans were in for a real treat. Those of you familiar with my "Ireland Section" here on the Josh Ritter Fansite know that Erin was also with Josh during his shows over there and are familiar with our various escapades over there. And you know that she ROCKS. Personally, this would be my first time seeing Erin since that Ireland trip, so I was psyched - both to see her and to experience her great music live again...

< Sam, Josh, and Zack make some final decisions backstage, moments before taking the stage.
Erin and Josh took turns opening and closing these six shows. Tonight, Erin would go first. While she rocked out onstage (her band usually consists of just a drummer, which - along with her mean guitar and sweet vocals - makes for a great sound; "40's vocals meets The White Stripes" someone said that week), I reunited with the boys - and met Ari, the kick-ass tour manager for these U.S. Spring concerts.
Josh and the band's set was a great one that rolled on with what the rest of the country had already gotten: the beats of new drummer Dave Hingerty (formerly of The Frames), new presentations of fan-favorites, and the appearance of one particular new song, the much buzzed about "Monster Ballads," which premeired on this tour. What an awesome song - check out the "New Songs" guide here for a sound clip.

SOMERVILLE PHOTOS from Neale Eckstein
Doug's Buzz-Kill
Don't ever say I haven't "taken one for the team" or sacrificed for these little trips... On the morning of August 23rd, I purchased a new stereo for my Jeep - one that would (a) kick ass, (b) be able to play my sacred ipod, and (c) keep me company on my trek up and down the East Coast for these shows. That night, while I was at Josh's show, some "Southie" (South Boston resident) felt the need to have my new kick-ass stereo for themselves and freed it from my car - the hard way.
Total, total bummer....
Neale Eckstein does everything well, including taking pictures. He is partly respsonsible for an amazing "house concert series" that Josh himself has played. Check out Foxrun.org for one of the coolest things going in contemporary folk music. He was all over the Somerville Theatre on this night, and captured some great moments from this show. Click HERE to see a bunch of these pics! And thanks, Neale...
Okay, I have to admit: I was NOT an active Josh Ritter archivist/street teamer/fansite dude on this night. No recording, no taking pictures, really. This was more of a private night for me to enjoy some music, friends, and spirits afterwards. I did manage to snap a couple pics, like the one above. I left the photographs to the one and only Neale Eckstein (see below); check those out!
